Henry A. Buchtel
MMed (China), Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM), Licensed Acupuncturist (MI)
Legislative Committee Chair, Michigan Society of Acupuncturists

I have been involved with the Chinese language and Traditional Chinese Medicine for the past 23 years, an adventure that started with my move to China in 2001.
I completed a 5-year post-graduate degree at the Hunan University of Chinese Medicine (HUCM), and moved back to my hometown of Ann Arbor shortly afterwards where I practice full-time as an acupuncturist, specializing in pain management. I see patients in my private practice and by referral only at the University of Michigan Back & Pain Center and the Division of Gastroenterology.
In addition to my clinical practice, I have worked as a Chinese/English medical translator and interpreter and translated several books on Chinese medicine.
During my clinical internship at the integrated biomedical-Chinese medicine hospital affiliated with HUCM I worked in both inpatient and outpatient departments. I was responsible for new patient intake and acupuncture treatments for the 10-bed ICU in the Neurological Surgery department. During that time I also assisted the department chief with treatments in the outpatient Acupuncture and Tuina departments. My Masters degree research, completed in 2011 and presented at the 2013 Society for Acupuncture Research conference, focused on the clinical efficacy of trigger point acupuncture in the treatment of frozen shoulder.
Since moving back to Ann Arbor I have specialized in pain management and cancer support/oncology acupuncture. I also have experience with tiao jing (regulating menstruation), controlling seasonal allergies, and general wellness and stress management.
I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to study with several renowned teachers and practitioners in China, and am currently co-authoring a book for Eastland Press (USA) about my teacher Prof. Peng Jian's clinical experience in herbal medicine.
